Open House on Bus Rapid Transit in Northwest Oklahoma City Set for Thursday

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma City residents have the chance to learn about a new bus rapid transit (BRT) service connecting the city’s northwest side, Midtown, and downtown via Northwest Expressway and Classen Boulevard.  BRT is a bus-based transit system that delivers fast, reliable and efficient service operating in a rail-like manner but with a significantly lower cost. EMBARK officials are holding an open house to provide information and obtain feedback from residents. The open house takes place along Route 023 at Trinity Baptist Church located at 1329 NW 23 St. in Oklahoma City from 4 – 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 28.

“As traffic in northwest Oklahoma City continues to grow due to thriving businesses and affordable housing, walkability, transit, and land-use issues will continue to intensify,” said EMBARK director Jason Ferbrache. “The bus rapid transit project will bring new mobility options to the area. Roughly 120,000 jobs are within half a mile of the route - that’s about 20% of Central Oklahoma’s 600,000 jobs!”

The BRT project will help transform a portion of the Northwest Expressway into a multimodal transit corridor by introducing infrastructure that will accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, public transit and motorists. The approximately 8-mile route (one-way) will connect to EMBARK’s greater transit network providing access to work, education, healthcare, entertainment and more.

At the open house, residents can learn more about the structure and planned stops as well as provide feedback on how the new service will benefit their daily routines. BRT service is anticipated to launch in late 2023.
